About the Course
Emerald Greens is the only 18 hole golf course within a 20 mile radius of Gouverneur, NY. It is one of only 4 courses in St. Lawrence County (NY State’s Largest County) that is privately owned and operated. The original 9 holes were built and designed by Jim & Margaret Rubar of Gouverneur, NY. While the “new 9” were built and designed by John & Mary Cunningham. Opened in 1965 as the “Jim/Mar driving range” by Jim & Margaret Rubar of Gouverneur, NY. The Rubars’ built the original 9 holes and sold the course in the 1970s.
The course was purchased by Four Local families and named the “Four by Fore” Golf Course. The “Four by Fore” ran successfully for years and sold in the late 1980s to Peter Ilion. The course fell on hard times and went into receivership and in 1996 it was operated by Larry & Linda Hance of Gouverneur and operated under the name Gouverneur Greens. The course was sold at public auction in May of 1998 to Curt Flick of LaFargeville, NY. The present owners John & Mary Cunningham, formally of Alexandria Bay, NY purchased the course in September of 1998 and was named Emerald Greens.
The course expanded slowly by adding holes as financially feasible. The holes were designed by the membership and constructed by local contractors. The design of the “new 9” incorporated water into 6 new holes, defined fairways and rough throughout the course. A spring fed reservoir was built between holes 10 & 13 and a fire truck sits there as an irrigation pump for the course. The course was finally completed in the spring of 2019 and continues to mature and define.
